1. Introduction

Shri Shivaji Mofat Education Society, Kandhar, Tal. Kandhar, Dist., Nanded was established in 1948 on Shiv Jayanti (the birth anniversary of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj). This is the parent institute of our college Shri Shivaji College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Kandhar, Dist. Nanded. The college was established in June 1959.

Marathwada region of Maharashtra State was enduring injustice and ill-treatment under the reign of Nizam of Hyderabad. Kandhar Tahsil in Nanded district of Marathwada Region of Maharashtra State is known as economically, socially, culturally, and educationally backward. During the rule of Nizam educational facilities were inaccessible and insufficient. Students had to move to a city or district place for matriculation and higher education. At taluka level, only primary education was provided and that too was in Urdu medium, which led to cultural & linguistic slavery. In such an extremely difficult situation the Founder and Administrator of our institute Hon. Dr. Keshavraoji Dhondge, Ex-M. P., Ex-M.L.A., Veteran Freedom Fighter, had faced innumerable difficulties in his educational career. He was brought up by his mother Matoshri Muktai because of the sad demise of his father Shri Shankarraoji Dhondge in his natal age. Hon. Dr. Keshavraoji was very much interested and keen about his own higher education. While pursuing his higher studies he faced many difficulties and obstacles. He had many bitter experiences. Through these experiences he built up his career and nurtured his personality. Then he resolved to contribute his share in the historical, epoch making and constructive enterprise of social, cultural and education prosperity of the under privileged and downtrodden. He was greatly inspired and guided by his mother for this constructive work. He received emotional, financial, social strength and co-operation from his friends and colleagues. He has patriotic sense in this educational enterprise

To achieve the goal of, “the betterment and prosperity of the deprived”, he with the help of his colleagues established Shri Shivaji Mofat Education Society at Gaul, a small village in Kandhar Tahshil, which was well known for its social tendency to fight against injustice. The motto of this Sanstha is “Knowledge is Life! Ignorance is Death!!” (Vidhya hech Jiwan!! Awidya hech Maran!!)

Hon. Dr. Keshavraoji Dhondge resolved to impart education and knowledge to the wards of the down-trodden, poverty-stricken people, unfortunate farmers and laymen of this region. He believed in the power of knowledge. In his task his colleagues, Hon. Shri Gurnathrao Kurude (EX M.L.A., Veteran Freedom Fighter), and many others co-operated him constantly. All the poor people in the vicinity of Kandhar extended to him all possible help in this mission.

Hon. Dr. Keshavraoji Dhondge Saheb gave a significant contribution in establishing Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University at Nanded. He took a very strong stand in the State Assembly to establish a separate university for Nanded region.

Hon. Dr. Keshavraoji Dhondge Saheb was honoured on the occasion of his birth centenary year in both the houses of Maharashtra State in Vidhansabha (State Assembly) and Vidhanparishad (Legislative Council) by Hon. Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde, Hon. Deputy Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnvis and Vidhansabha Speaker Hon. Dr. Rahulji Narvekar for his extraordinary parliamentary, social and educational work.

For the last 64 years the existing governing body of the institution has been striving hard to achieve its goals and aims and continuously enterprising to provide quality higher education to the socially, economically, cultural and geographically backward students.

During the initial stages, the college provided free education and hostel facility to the students and hence the name of our college was “Shri Shivaji Mofat College” but because of the state governments directives, we had to change the name as Shri Shivaji College. Most of the students who come for admission are from economically weaker section of the society. Our college is run “Not-for-profit” which is special character liked by the community
